Geometry/Topology at Michigan State University

 Information for Prospective Students

The Geometry/Topology group has a very active graduate program. There is constant interaction between faculty and students, and we are very proud of the accomplishments of our past students. Our current and past students have worked in many areas of low-dimensional topology and geometry including:

  • 3- and 4-Dimensional Topology and Geometry
  • Gauge Theory
  • Geometric Analysis
  • Geometric Variational Problems
  • Knot Theory and its Invariants
  • Mapping Class Groups
  • Symplectic Topology

We welcome inquiries and applications from students interested in the possibility of graduate work with our group. If you are interested, please contact one of our faculty members, and also the Department's Director of Graduate Studies. An overview of the program, including requirements for admission, can be found here. Application may be made online.

RTG Graduate Traineeships in Geometry/ Topology

As part of our National Science Foundation supported Research Training Group Program, we are actively seeking applicants for the graduate program in Geometry/ Topology at MSU. RTG Graduate Traineeships provide eleven month support for new graduate students with no teaching duties for the first two years of study. During their third year, RTG Trainees will be supported as Department of Mathematics Teaching Assistants. Our goal is to streamline the path to the Ph.D. and to provide enhanced research opportunities.

RTG funds will provide eleven month stipends of $25,000 plus tuition and fees for the two years of the Trainee's program. Each RTG Trainee will receive also receive a travel allowance.

Participants of this program are required to be citizens, nationals, or permanent residents of the United States. We actively seek applications from qualified individuals wishing to participate in the RTG Program. We especially encourage applications from women and minorities. As one can peruse from our web page, the Geometry/ Topology Group has had an extremely diverse as well as successful collection of graduate students.

One can apply by following the procedures outlined above. Please be sure to indicate your interest in Geometry/ Topology and in the RTG Program.
