Requirements for students who declared the math major prior to Spring 2002. These students also have the option of choosing to satisfy the new BS Mth requirements listed HERE.

The requirements for a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics consist of three parts: the University Requirements for all students at Michigan State University, the requirements of the College of Natural Science, and the requirements of the Department of Mathematics.

I. University Requirements

  1. American Thought and Language: ATL 1XX. This course is a prerequisite for IAH 201.
  2. Integrative Studies in Arts and Humanities: IAH 201 or IAH 202 or 206 and a second IAH course numbered IAH 211A or higher.
  3. Integrative Studies in the Social Sciences: ISS 2XX and ISS 3XX.

II. Requirements of the College of Natural Science

  1. One of the following biological science courses: PLB 105, BS 110, BS 111, ENT 205, MMG 105, MMG 205, PSL 250, or ZOL 141..
  2. A year of chemistry with a lab: CEM 141,142,161 (or its equivalent).
  3. A year of calculus-based physics: PHY 183,184 (or its equivalent).
  4. A minimum of thirty credits in courses numbered 300 or higher, including courses in other colleges.

III. Requirements of the Department of Mathematics

  1. For students entering MSU in fall semester 1997 or later, first-year competency in a foreign language.
    or,
    for students admitted to the teacher certification program, completion of the Professional Educational sequence (TE 150, TE 250 or CEP 240, TE 301, TE 401 and TE 402).
  2. Calculus and differential equations: MTH 132, MTH 133, MTH 234, MTH 235 (or the honors equivalent).
  3. A total of 24 credits in math courses at the 300-level or above.  At least four of these courses must be at the 400-level or above.
    These 24 credits must include:
    1. One of the following two algebra groups:
      1. MTH 310
        MTH 314
        MTH 411 or MTH 414 or MTH 417 or MTH 418H or MTH 481.
      2. MTH 418H
        MTH 419H
    2. One of the following two analysis groups:
      1. MTH 320
        MTH 421 or MTH 425 or MTH 441 or MTH 442.
      2. MTH 428H
        MTH 429H
    3. A capstone course: MTH 496.
    4. Mathematics electives at the 300 level or above, to complete 24 credits.
      1. Students may not use both MTH 309 and MTH 314 towards the 24 credits.
      2. STT 351 or STT 441 may be substituted for one 300 level MTH course.
      3. MTH 351, MTH 415, MTH 424, and MTH 443 may not be used to fulfill the requirements for the major.

Total Credits: 120 (minimum) with a minimum GPA in mathematics courses of 2.0 and a minimum overall GPA of 2.0.
