 Assistantships

Standard offer for someone with a B.S. in Mathematics:

Dear :

I am impressed by your application and very interested in attracting you as a graduate student to our department. Therefore, I am offering you a ½-time graduate teaching assistantship in the Department of Mathematics for the 2001-2002 academic year. The stipend for beginning assistants with an B.S. degree will be at least $11,151 for nine months and I expect a modest increase for 2001-02.

Teaching assistants also receive a fee waiver, health insurance, and a nine credit tuition waiver each semester. Normally, teaching assistants are expected to carry fifteen credits per academic year. The assistantship will be renewed beyond the first year if you make satisfactory progress in your program and you satisfactorily fulfill your teaching responsibilities. Additional support in the form of a teaching or research assistantship is usually available in summer semester for students who request it. The summer stipend varies from $2,000-$2,700, depending on the type of support.

I estimate your teaching duties will involve, on the average, approximately 4.5 contact hours per week, and your total time commitment will not exceed twenty hours per week including classroom duties, preparation, grading, and office/helproom hours. First year teaching assistants generally have a somewhat reduced teaching load during their first semester.

The offer of the assistantship will remain open until April 15, 2001. However, I hope you will reach a favorable decision before that time and let me know as soon as possible.

All new teaching assistants are required to attend the university-wide teaching assistant orientation as well as our departmental orientation. These orientation programs will be held the week of August 20-24, 2001.

Please feel free to call me at (517) 353-4650 or e-mail me (brown@math.msu.edu) or Ms. Barbara Miller (bmiller@math.msu.edu) if you have any questions.
